Gervonta Davis and Erislandy Lara were not the only stars to put on a performance at the Barclays Center on Saturday evening. Super welterweight contender Jesús Ramos also stepped into the squared circle of truth during Memorial Day Weekend. Landing 21 more jabs and 46 more body punches, Ramos was able to wear down Luke Santamaría over 10 rounds to earn the 19th victory of his young career. Still, Ramos is looking to do more and improve from here on out.
“I could have pressed a little more, gone to the body a little more, he was kind of slippery in there, and I didn’t want to risk anything because he would counter so I was trying to stay composed and stay at my distance,” Ramos said during a post-fight interview.
Ramos was not only fighting to earn his 19th pro victory on Saturday. He was also looking to avenge the loss of his uncle, Abel. Just three months ago, Luke Santamaría beat Abel Ramos in a 10-round bout.
“Yes of course (it was important to avenge the loss of my uncle). It wasn’t the way we wanted to win, but I think it takes two to tango and tonight I was the one who wanted to fight,” Ramos said about beating Santamaría.
At 19-0, Ramos doesn’t have a particular opponent he’d like to fight next. Instead, he’ll take the next formidable foe that his promoter puts in front of him.
“I want whoever they want to put in front of me. We’re going to keep going forward and take whatever fight my team thinks is best for me,” Ramos said.
“I’m going to go back and watch the fight and grow. I went 10 rounds again and it’s going to help me mature a lot more.”
