Jeff Van Gundy has had an extensive career coaching and being associated with the NBA, and may now be tapped for another job in the league. The Athletic’s Sam Amick was recently on The Brodie and the Beard podcast with Kelly Iko and stated that Van Gundy is a name he keeps hearing in regard to replacing Mike D’Antoni as head coach of the Houston Rockets.
“I do not get the sense that Mike D’Antoni is going to be back. They’ve had a major divide in the contract negotiations… the information that we’ve constantly heard is that that bridge, for the most part, has been burned… Jeff Van Gundy’s name is the one that I’ve heard consistently as a very possible replacement for Mike.”
Van Gundy’s last coaching job in the NBA was as the coach of the 2003-2007 Houston Rockets teams that were highlighted by Hall of Famers Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming. Since then, Van Gundy has worked as an NBA commentator as well as coach of Team USA for the 2019 FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
Most notably, Van Gundy led the eighth-seeded New York Knicks to the NBA Finals in the 1999 lockout-shortened season, with the Knicks ultimately falling to the San Antonio Spurs 4-1.
