Originally, two-time dunk champion Jason Richardson was slated to take his talents to ‘Hot-Lanta’ and join the Atlanta Hawks at least for training camp in hopes that he could make an NBA roster for at least one last time. In the past few days, the Hawks have been releasing pictures of their guys doing funny and weird things for media purposes but Richardson was nowhere to be seen.
Now news has come across, from Richardson himself, that he will be stepping away from the NBA and retiring.
Following from J-Rich’s instagram account.
Richardson was never an All-Star, he never won an NBA championship and in his 14 year NBA career, he only went to the playoffs four times but J-Rich prolonged the dunk contest after Vince Carter revitalized it.
He won’t be heading to the hall-of-fame and his only shining moments in the league where when he was the go-to scorer on a few less than stellar Golden State and Charlotte teams. Richardson played for the Warriors, Bobcats, Phoenix Suns, Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers throughout his time in the NBA.
But the one thing fans including myself will never forget is Richardson becoming the first player since Michael Jordan to win back-to-back dunk contests, something that Drake definitely should’ve referenced in his newest song with the same name.
Now that Richardson has elected to hang it up, it’s time to sit back and reflect and enjoy some of the best plays from one of the most exciting players of the 2000’s.
Jason Richardson reflects on the 2002 & 2003 dunk contests.
