One of the most judged and critiqued played in the NBA this season has been dynamic 5’9″ point guard Isaiah Thomas. After an ugly half-season stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers followed by a trade to the Lakers where he is currently, unrestricted free agency now sits just months away for Thomas.
A future in LA likely isn’t in the cards for Thomas, and the situation is being treated as such with him taking a backseat to rookie Lonzo Ball. Thomas recently answered some questions on his Twitter and one of them raised some eyebrows. A user asked about Thomas’ looming offseason and the guard wouldn’t rule out a return to his old team, the Boston Celtics.

After putting up MVP-caliber numbers just last season for the Celtics, it looked like Isaiah Thomas was on the verge of a contract in the ballpark of a max deal. However, all of that changed when he was dealt to Cleveland this past summer and saw his value plummet, making for what should surely be an intriguing free agency period.
Though Thomas is leaving the door open for a potential reunion with the Celtics, it wouldn’t make much sense financially or fit-wise. The Celtics roster a slew of young players they’d like to hold on to once their rookie contracts expire, though it remains to be seen what type of money Thomas will now receive on the open market.
Of course, Boston also has Thomas’ replacement in star point guard Kyrie Irving who has led the Celtics to a stellar campaign and is the franchise building block moving forward. Bringing a ball-dominant miniature guard such as Thomas into the equation would likely further complicate things and could stunt the development of the roster as a whole.
Especially with him remaining adamant about holding down a starting role, a reconciliation between Isaiah Thomas and the already loaded Boston Celtics appears to be a far-fetched idea.
