The Boston Celtics have had a busy offseason, landing Al Horford in free agency and drafting wing player Jaylen Brown with the 3rd overall pick. With 9 picks in this years NBA draft, the Celtics used their picks to land 6 new rookies onto their roster. They even tried to lobby their picks and young assets for for Bulls all-star Jimmy Butler, but after that fell through, the Celtics have been quiet on the trading end. Despite all that activity this summer, Celtics all-star point guard Isaiah Thomas says the Celtics need to do more this offseason.
According to Chris Forsberg of ESPN, Thomas was talking about the Celtics offseason while watching the summer league team play in Las Vegas:
“We need more,” Thomas said Saturday while watching the Celtics open play at the Las Vegas summer league. “I’m definitely comfortable with the moves he’s made. I mean, everyone knew we were trying to get [Kevin] Durant. We came up short but we got another All-Star in Al Horford, and I know Danny’s not done. Hopefully we get a few more pieces to the puzzle and that’ll be a successful summer.”
“I’m trying to see who’s out there, man. I’m trying, I’m trying to get some guys out there,” Thomas said. “I know a few guys out there that want to play with Boston. If those guys need me to call anybody or reach out to anybody, I’m all ears and a helping hand.
“I don’t know who would help, but anybody that can put the ball in the basket from 3 would definitely help us and our spacing. I know there is an old guy out there named Jason Terry — he can still hit some shots. That’s my old head. I know there’s some shooters out there that can put the ball in the basket and hopefully we can get our hands on them.”
Could we see Jason Terry return to a Celtics uniform? As a 38-year-old, Terry can still shoot the ball, if that’s what Thomas wants. It’s slim pickings for NBA teams right now who are recruiting free agents with most of top or mid-level free agents gone from the free market. Could Thomas be suggesting another trade idea? The offseason is a long 4 months of time to look at trade opportunities, free agents and recruitment like Isaiah Thomas has. Can the Celtics add another threat to make this team an even better contender in the East? It looks like their all-star point guard wants to win now.
