Will Prince hails from the UK and creates some of the best sketches and artwork of rappers and singers. He has done work for Kid Cudi, Asher Roth, Chance The Rapper, Action Bronson, Mac Miller and so many more. Check out what Will had to below in my question and answer with him.
Tony Stark: First off thanks for doing this interview. How is life over in London, England treating you?
Will Prince: Thank you for reaching out! I’m actually up north at the minute in my hometown Carlisle, back and forth. It’s pretty boring man, I want to be out in the States so bad!
TS: How did you get your start and when did you realize that this is more than just a hobby?
WP: I’ve always like to draw I think the big change was when I started taking an art class every Wednesday when I was a teenager. That really made me want to pursue it and see how far it can take me.
TS: I’m a huge Kid Cudi fan so naturally the first time I saw your work was for Cudder back in the MySpace days, who was the first big artist to get you to do art for them?
WP: That’s awesome you go so far back! Yeah, Cudi is the man! The first big artist who reached out and wanted me to do art was Asher Roth. Thank you Asher!
TS: When creating a masterpiece, how do you determine where to start and with what tools?
WP: You’re too kind! To be honest everything with me is spur of the moment, most of he time its the tool I can get my hands on. If there’s some highlighters lying about I’ll draw with them so it’s mostly about timing for me. My best pieces come from complete freedom.
TS: Your works give me that Saturday morning cartoon feeling. Where do you pull inspiration from and what other artists have influenced your style?
WP: In all honesty I have never really taken inspiration from one particular artist I definitely always look at notice that catches my eye and look into why. Like you mentioned cartoons, I would always draw my favourite cartoon character of the moment or movie poster etc. I’m always watching.
TS: Whether it be doing covers for Action Bronson (Blue Chips), Asher Roth (Pabst & Jazz) or Chief Keef (Bang Pt. 2), who has been your favourite rapper to draw?
WP: People who’s features I can catch are my favourite, people who are unique. The likes of Kanye West, Tyler, The Creator, Action Bronson, Chance The Rapper. I like the shapes they can create.
TS: If you could design album artwork with one artist and one artist only, who would it be and why?
WP: So many artists I’d love to work with. Back in the day I would of jumped in and said Kanye straight away! But, I’v always wanted to do Kid Cudi’s album artwork too so… Cudi! + That would be pretty cool going from myspace days to actual album art.
TS: You recently opened your online store and are set to sell some iPhone cases with your artwork displayed on them. What other items or clothing will be featured and when can we expect them to go on sale?
WP: Eventually I want to do every thing, tees, prints, Canvases, stickers, laptop Cases. Everything!
TS: I look forward to getting some soon! What does the future hold and what are your goals for greater success in the new year?
WP: I over think things too much so right now I just want to keep positive, keep working away and I’m sure good will come from that, let’s see where I end up.
