Free agent guard Ian Clark will sign with the Golden State Warriors, according to RealGM’s Shams Charania.
Free agent guard Ian Clark has agreed to sign with the Golden State Warriors, league sources told RealGM on Monday.
The two sides are finalizing terms on Clark’s deal after the 6-foot-3 guard’s commitment, sources said.
Clark, at 6’3″ and 180 pounds, is undersized for the shooting guard position that he plays. However, Clark starred on the Warriors’ Summer League team in 2013, including a 33-point, seven 3-pointer game in the Summer League championship game.
Clark went undrafted out of Belmont in 2013. He played the 2013-14 season with the Utah Jazz, and played part of the 2014-15 season with the Jazz before he was picked up by the Nuggets. For his 53-game career, Clark has played just 6.9 minutes/game and averaged 2.4 points. Clark has a reputation as a 3-point shooter, but hasn’t been terribly impressive from that range in his pro career(34.4%). However, Clark is young, and has plenty of time to improve and carve out a role for himself in the NBA.
Clark is unlikely to get much playing time on a Warriors team that’s coming off of an NBA championship, but he’s a shooter, and the Warriors are the best shooting team in the league. Playing for Golden State will be a fantastic experience for Clark, and should serve to help him improve.
All in all, this has been quite the quiet offseason for Golden State, and I’m sure they wouldn’t have it any other way. As the saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” the Warriors’ roster is clearly not “broke;” they just won the championship. They want to keep their core group of players together, as evidenced by their re-signing of Draymond Green. The only other major move that the Warriors made this offseason was trading David Lee to the Celtics in order to clear some cap space.
