The Liberty Flames and Head Coach Hugh Freeze have agreed to an eight-year contract extension that will pay him nearly $40 million. This new contract extension will reportedly pay him just under five million dollars per year and will keep him with the program through the 2030 college football season. Freeze has been with the Liberty program since the 2019 season and is currently coaching his fourth season with the program. His tenure with the Liberty Flames has been largely successful in those four seasons.

Currently in the middle of his fourth season with the Liberty Flames, Hugh Freeze has led the team to an overall record of 33-12 as an FBS Independent Program. He has won three consecutive bowl games with the program. Those wins were the 2019 Cure Bowl, 2020 Cure Bowl, and 2021 Lending Tree Bowl. This season the Liberty Flames are already bowl-eligible with a 7-1 record on the season. His time thus far with Liberty has been a success and the program has rewarded him with a big contract extension because of that success. They are also hoping it keeps bigger programs away from him and keeps him with the program long-term.
