The Heisman Trust has issued a statement regarding Reggie Bush’s recent public push to regain his Heisman Trophy. The organization has argued that they will return his Heisman Trophy once the NCAA reinstates his stats from the 2005-2006 college football season.
“Bush’s 2005 season records remain vacated by the NCAA and, as a result, under the rule set forth by the Heisman Trust and stated on the Heisman Ballot, he is not eligible to be awarded the 2005 Heisman Memorial Trophy,” the organization stated.
“Should the NCAA reinstate Bush’s 2005 status, the Heisman Trust looks forward to welcoming him back to the Heisman family.”
Reggie Bush was stripped of his Heisman Trophy in 2010 after an investigation conducted by the NCAA declared he received improper benefits from outside boosters. However, those “improper benefits” would be deemed acceptable under the NCAA’s current rules regarding name, image and likeness. As a result, Reggie Bush and his fans have pushed for the Heisman Trust to reverse their decision regarding his Heisman Trophy. Regardless of the NCAA’s policies, the Heisman Trust is an independent body and can move to return his Heisman Trophy at any point.
