HBO is currently on a high with the final season of Game of Thrones and the upcoming return of Big Little Lies. Not to mention, the premium network also released its controversial Michael Jackson documentary earlier this year. Next, HBO has its sights set on a new documentary. This time, the network will be promoting a much anticipated documentary about the life of soccer star, Diego Maradona.
The Asif Kapadia directed documentary will chronicle the life of the soccer legend through 500 hours of rare footage from Maradona’s personal archive. The upcoming feature length film will premiere at Cannes. However, those unable to catch the film there can watch it on HBO on September 24th. To top it all off, the documentary will also have a short theatrical run in the U.S. as well.
Peter Nelson of HBO Sports said, “Diego Maradona has long been considered the greatest footballer ever.” Nelson states, “Asif Kapadia’s filmmaking perfectly captures every high and low of his transcendent career, from his controversial ‘Hand of God’ goal to his awakening of Napoli, and more.” Kapadia adds, “I’m excited to see how the North American audience reacts. I hope this is the beginning of a long journey together with HBO and Diego.”
