Ladies and Gentleman, the Oscar race has officially started. Today, we got our first look at Steven Spielberg‘s new drama surrounding the Pentagon Papers starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep. From the moment that the film was announced people have been speculating that the film would instantly be an Oscar player when it was released and from the looks of the trailer, those people were not wrong. Given our current climate, it’s hard to envision a scenario in which this film doesn’t garner massive attention from the Academy. The film would have to be undeniably awful in order for it to not be a major player this winter.
Perhaps, the most impressive thing about this film is the speed in which it came together. Spielberg was only hired to work on the project back in March of this year. The film cast up very quickly and wrapped filming in August. Seeing as most films take multiple years to plan out, film and edit if ‘The Post’ ends up being as good as it looks it will truly be even more of a triumph.
We’ve attached the official trailer and synopsis below.
‘A cover-up that spanned four U.S. Presidents pushed the country’s first female newspaper publisher of The Washington Post, Kay Graham (Meryl Streep) and its hard-driving editor, Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks) to join an unprecedented battle between journalist and government in publishing the Pentagon Papers.’
