San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich, a five-time championship coach and the longest-tenured active coach in the NBA, is set to extend his tenure in the Spurs lead coaching role. According to a report from ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski, Popovich is returning on a three-year deal that’s been in place for months.
“A Popovich contract extension has been a foregone conclusion for months, but the deal won’t change the fact that he will continue to take his coaching future year to year, league sources said. Spurs ownership believes he’s entitled to manage his future the way he wants, sources said.”
Gregg Popovich’s extension follows reports of his uncertainty in regards to returning to coach next season, as well as the tragic death of his wife Erin and displeasure for the
trends of the modern NBA leading to increased speculation over whether or not Coach Pop would close the book on his storied career.
Popovich’s Spurs finished the 2018-19 regular season 48-34, fighting the Denver Nuggets to a Game 7 in the first round of this year’s NBA Playoffs, which saw the seventh-seeded Spurs eliminated in a narrow defeat following an end-game tactical gaffe.
