In one of the best and least told love stories in the NBA, LeBron James complimented Gregg Popovich in the greatest way possible. According to ESPN, LeBron called Gregg Popovich, “..the greatest coach of all time” yet again, ahead of their matchup on Saturday.
“To be able to do what he’s done where the basketball has changed so much and he’s been able to have a growth mindset and change with the game [is impressive],
He said something similar back in August when discussing potentially playing for Coach Pop in the 2020 Olympics. It is no wonder LeBron holds him in such high esteem, he knows Coach Pop’s greatness more than most. LeBron James has already faced the Spurs 3 times in the NBA Finals, being vanquished twice and mostly in heartbreaking fashion. But is Popovich the greatest of all time?
He is currently 7th in total wins, having a better winning percentage than just 1 coach above him. Sits 314 wins above .500 and has led a rag tag, Duncan-less, team to a (33-9) record. He has also won the 3rd most conference championships and is tied for 3rd most Finals championships.
It is a tough call but he definitely has the stats and reputation to back up The King’s claim. Guiding this current Spurs roster to a top 2 seed does nothing but increase his chances. What do you think, is Gregg Popovich really the G.O.A.T.?
