To the dismay of many classic literature lovers, the amazing novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald has been delayed until the summer of 2013.
The reason? Well, here’s what the President of Domestic Distribution at Warner Brothers, Dan Fellman had to say:
“Based on what we’ve seen, Baz Luhrmann’s incredible work is all we anticipated and so much more. It truly brings Fitzgerald’s American classic to life in a completely immersive, visually stunning and exciting way. We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible.”
You can take that however you see fit, but a lot of people have been saying the film has been moved back because of the fierce competition it would have been facing had it still opened this December.
Films like The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Django Unchained, and Les Miserables would have stepped on “Gatsby’s” toes a bit, and the studio essentially wants to make sure the film makes as much money as possible, which is why they’ve pushed it back.
Although I certainly respect the decision push the film back, I honestly feel that it would have been just as successful if it were released this December. The Great Gatsby is an American love story that has endured for years and years. Surely people who loved the book would have come to theaters in droves just to see it come to life?
