Over the last few years, Girls Who Code Inc. has made major strides in improving the gender gap within the growing tech industry. During its run, Girls Who Code Inc. has touched nearly 100,000 girls in every state in the country. Using campus, club and summer immersion programs, the non profit organization strives to increase the percentage of women computer scientists which is 13% lower than it was in 1995. Thanks to the continued effort by Girls Who Code Inc. and many other hard working organizations, the tech industry is on track to achieve gender parity in 2027.
As time goes on, Girls Who Code Inc. looks to move the anticipated date of gender parity in computer science up a few years. This week, the growing non profit took a major step in the right direction. As a result of the hard work and good faith developed in their work, Girls Who Code Inc. has received a $1 million donation from Lyft riders across the country. The donation comes as part of a twelve month campaign by Girls Who Code Inc. and Lyft through their “Round Up and Donate” feature that allows ride share users to donate a portion of their Lyft fare to charity.
In a blog post published by Lyft, the ride share service wrote, “We’re excited to share that in just over 12 months, Lyft passengers have donated over $1 million to Girls Who Code. These donations have helped launch over 3,500 clubs nationally — reaching 84,000 girls — and have helped fund financial assistance for students, classroom equipment, and teacher trainings. Beyond app donations, we’ve also been excited to partner with Girls Who Code on events like Brit + Co’s Create Good in New York City last fall, which raised over $21,000 for the organization.”
Girls Who Code Inc. founder and CEO, Reshma Saujani, added, “We couldn’t be more excited to be celebrating the $1 million milestone with our friends at Lyft through their unique Round Up & Donate program.”
