Gina Prince-Bythewood has signed on to direct The Woman King starring Viola Davis. Inspired by true events, the film follows the story of Nanisca, a general of an all-woman led military unit known as the Amazons. Alongside her daughter, Nawi, Nanisca battles the French as they hope to free their people and maintain their honor.
“We at JuVee are beyond excited to introduce this incredible story of the Women Warriors of The Dahomey Ahosi tribe to the world. It’s time that they truly occupy their place in history and in Gina Prince-Bythewood’s hands, it will be a gamechanger. This project could not be a more perfect example of our legacy,” Davis and Julius Tennon of JuVee Productions said about the film.
Davis and Tennon will produce alongside Cathy Schulman and Maria Bello. Lupita Nyong’o was once set to star in and help produce the film, but plans have changed.
There is no scheduled release date for the film yet.
