There was a method behind the madness of releasing wide receiver Victor Cruz and running back Rashad Jennings. New York also announced they will let tight end Larry Donnell walk too. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the Giants have made it a priority to retain Jason Pierre-Paul this offseason.
“I do expect them to make a legitimate run in the coming days and weeks,” NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo said on Monday’s edition of Up to the Minute Live. “They will try and get a deal done before he can potentially hit the free agent market.”
Last offseason the Giants gave Olivier Vernon $17 million per year. They may have to do something similar with JPP if they plan on keeping him. Pierre-Paul has already said that he will not accept another one-year deal as he thinks he has proved that he can still play despite the hand injury.
New York is expected to have about $34 million to work with in free agency according to Sportrac.com. JPP, 28, recorded 7 sacks during the 2016 season. Jonathan Hankins is the other impending free agent on the Giants to do list.
