On Saturday, July 22, former lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. made his return to the ring after suffering back-to-back losses at the hands of Devin Haney. In an exciting, 12-round bout, Kambosos Jr. secured a majority decision win against Maxi Hughes in Oklahoma. As the Australian fighter celebrated his first pro win since 2021, many observers took to social media to share their displeasure with the judges’ decision.
“Just watched back Kambosos vs Hughes. Josef Mason was the judge that scored the fight 117-111 for Kambosos. That score is a disgrace,” Ade Oladipo tweeted.
“Every time I watch George Kambosos box I wonder how in the hell he defeated Teofimo Lopez,” Dan Canobbio added.
Hours after the fight came to a conclusion, Kambosos Jr. has elected to respond to those critical of the decision via Twitter.
“A close fight is not a robbery,” he tweeted.
“Listen, it was a close, gritty victory against a top 10 lightweight … in my return fight. Went straight into a tough test instead of taking a stiff. Do yourself a favor and mute that biased commentary and rewatch the fight. And then tell me exactly what you think, as many people have gone back, done that, and seen the decision was fair and correct.”
A close fight is not a robbery ????? With that being said, full respect to Maxie, we knew he would come to fight & how dangerous he was. A true top 10 lightweight for my return! We give him the utmost respect, it was an honour to share the ring with another warrior & family man. ?? pic.twitter.com/kDpwQcdIUU
