One key character will not return for the second season of The Sex Lives of College Girls. Earlier this week, actor Gavin Leatherwood revealed that he would return as Nico in the show’s sophomore run. Instead, he plans to branch off and take his career in a “different direction.” In a short statement obtained by Deadline, Leatherwood added that he was thankful to have the opportunity to appear in the show and wishes the cast nothing but the best.
“There is a Season 2, but I’m not going to go back,” he said.
“It was such an incredible experience. I think Mindy [Kaling] is brilliant, and the cast, everyone’s lovely, but with so many amazing opportunities out there, we want to keep spreading our wings and leading ourselves to other projects so that’s the move.”
Nico’s departure from the series leaves the door open for one of the show’s main characters, Kimberly. At the end of the first season, it becomes abundantly clear that Kimberly and Nico have feelings for each other, but Nico still has a long distance relationship that complicates things.
“I think Nico does have real feelings for Kimberly, and I think he kind of had them all along,” showrunner Justin Noble told TV Line.
“We wanted it to feel like we were living in a gray area where we didn’t exactly know what was up with these two, and the performers played that beautifully. We saw Kimberly pining after Nico, and we were watching Nico in a way where we couldn’t quite pin down where he was. But in the finale, we see he does care about this girl who kind of pursued him at her own expense.”
Season two of The Sex Lives of College Girls is in the works, but there is no word as to when it will arrive on HBO Max.
