Frank James, the man accused of shooting 10 people in a New York subway earlier this year, refused to come to federal court on Wednesday. In response, Judge William Kuntz requested that the United States Marshals Service forcibly bring James in for his scheduled status conference.
“Upon the defendant’s refusal to appear before the Court when requested in connection with the above-captioned case, it is hereby: ORDERED that the United States Marshals Service, their agents, and/or designees, use all necessary force to produce the above-named defendant,” Judge William Kuntz said, per ABC News.
Once he was brought to court, Kuntz reportedly “scolded” him and denied his motion to delay his trial.
On April 12, 2022, Frank James became the primary focus of a New York Police Department manhunt. James is accused of traveling to Brooklyn, New York and opening fire on travelers coming through the borough’s Sunset Park station. Ultimately, 10 people were injured, but no one was killed. After opening fire, he slipped out of the station and remained at large until he called the police and told them that he’d be at a nearby McDonald’s. Shortly thereafter, officers responded and arrested him.
James has been charged with using a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and conducting a terror attack against the city’s transportation system. Facing life in prison, he has pleaded not guilty to both charges. The trial is set to begin in February.
