It is unclear when former President Donald Trump will stand trial for his alleged attempts to overturn the results of the latest presidential election, but a former federal official is certain that he shouldn’t avoid punishment if he is convicted. During a recent interview with MSNBC’s Jen Psaki, U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said that the former President should “serve time” if he is convicted of any charge related to his alleged attempts to overturn the election.
“If in fact he’s convicted of the crimes charged by Jack Smith and the Department of Justice,” the 80th U.S. Attorney General told the former White House Press Secretary.
“Yeah, I think he should serve time, quite frankly.”
Gonzales clarified that we’re a “long way” from seeing the President behind bars, but says that it would be a “fair” punishment in the event that he’s convicted.
“There are people that on Jan. 6, went to the Capitol — maybe not at the clear direction of [former] President Trump,” the former Attorney General continued.
“But certainly, he did nothing to stop what happened that day.”
