Last night (July 7) Marvel treated fans to an exclusive and extended 3D first look at ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ at select IMAX theaters across the country which included 17 minutes of footage from the film. We were lucky enough to score tickets and are breaking down what you can expect when the film takes over theaters on August 1. And if you missed your chance to attend a screening, you can check out some of the new footage that was shown in the teaser trailer that hit the web today.
*****WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD*****
The screening kicked off with a word from director James Gunn says, “We’ve re-mastered some of our epic sequences into the IMAX 3D format, taking the scope and scale to new heights while creating a truly immersive, cinematic experience that will take you further into the Marvel Universe than ever before.”
That led into the scene introducing each of the characters as they are booked into an intergalactic prison. You may be familiar with that from the trailers.
After Star Lord (Chris Pratt) has a fight with a prison guard for using his headphones and an unfortunate encounter with a taser, the team finds themselves less than welcome in the prison cafeteria hall in less than fashionable yellow prison suits.
Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) proved to the be star of the scene with his hilarious and elaborate escape plan to break out of jail which includes a nuclear battery, an implanted arm control, and a VERY useful artificial leg. But Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) will be the comic relief of the film with his three word vocabulary and ignorant actions.
Gamora (Zoe Saldana) is as bad ass as you would hope. Right off the bat we are treated to her flying kicks, back flips and her ripping someones arm off with her leg. She is presented as a very important character to the Marvel Universe which will surely play out in the movie.
In all honesty, I didn’t have any desire to see the film, but after the scenes last night, it was definitely enough to make this a must see for me.
It appears to be a classic Marvel movie we have all grown to love. The scenes were packed with layered humor and explosive action. It has a lo-fi retro vibe that is complimented with its 70s and 80s classic rock soundtrack. You get a sense of chemistry between the characters immediately and why they have teamed up.
Although it was unclear if the entire sequence was uncut or edited together, it is still enough to get you pumped when ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ hits theaters on August 1.
