Former President Donald Trump is embroiled in a number of high-stakes legal battles. Most notably, he is accused of attempting to overturn the results of the most recent presidential election. As a result, the former reality show host will be the center of a trial in the nation’s capital sooner rather than later. In fact, the official of special counsel Jack Smith recently submitted a filing proposing a trial start date of January 2, 2024.
“[A] January 2 trial date would vindicate the public’s strong interest in a speedy trial — an interest guaranteed by the Constitution and federal law in all cases, but of particular significance here, where the defendant, a former president, is charged with conspiring to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election, obstruct the certification of the election results, and discount citizens’ legitimate votes,” the filing reads.
According to the filing, prosecutors expect the trial to last anywhere between four and six weeks. If the judge sides with the prosecution, Trump may have difficulty campaigning for the upcoming election. The Iowa caucuses, along with primaries in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada, are set to take place in January and February. Ironically, Trump calls the attempts to have the trial take place in January “election interference.”
“Deranged Jack Smith has just asked for a trial on the Biden Indictment to take place on January 2nd,” the former reality show host wrote on Truth Social.
“Only an out-of-touch lunatic would ask for such a date.”
