Universal Studios’ rather successful Franchise, Fast & Furious plans to take things to the next level for the now seven film series. While the latest movie ‘Furious 7’ has grossed $1.5B worldwide, confirmation of three more sequels with an eight film having a release date (April 14, 2017) already announced and director F. Gary Gary (Straight Outta Compton) being on board, there is no telling how far things can go.
Well according to Variety, the folks behind the action packed films are already in the beginning stages for developing spinoffs and prequels. This is what Vin Diesel had to say;
“We’ve written out story lines for various characters, we’ve been playing with it for a long time. It’s a very rich property and we’re committed to treating it with a lot of class.”
News of this magnitude will line up the Fast & Furious Franchise with the likes of Marvel with the whole cinematic universe and even Star Wars with providing possible origins for the respective characters in the F&F films. Now there isn’t word on which characters will get their own spinoffs but we could perhaps see Dwayne Johnson’s character Luke Hobbs branch off and get his own individual adventure.
Here’s what Universal Pictures Donna Langley had to say in reference to the talks about spinoffs and prequels;
“We’re certainly in conversations about how we can expand the franchise now. “It’s an ensemble cast and there’s room to bring characters in and out.”
Considering the franchise has F. Gary Gary on board to change the dynamics of the film as far as a more deeper and darker story line, we won’t be seeing Paul Walker in the upcoming films (Rest In Peace). So taking things in a different direction could certainly help build moving forward when you count in the idea of prequels and spinoffs.
As announced the next installment, Fast & Furious 8 will be in theaters April 14, 2017.
