Fast and Furious 9 has officially begun filming. Yup, you read that right, we’re up to 9 films in the franchise. (10 if you count Hobbs and Shaw!) Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel took to Instagram Monday morning to announce the beginning of production.
“Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow,” Diesel says as the video starts. “Can you believe it? We just completed our first day. It feels like a miracle — one hard-earned, but we’re just so grateful. We’re grateful to you, Universal, we’re grateful for our whole team, incredible crew, and incredible cast. Most importantly, we’re so grateful to you, world, that has adapted this franchise.” Diesel then turns to co-star Michelle Rodriguez, “And… can you believe it?”
“I can, actually,” says Rodriguez, who’s been standing by Diesel’s side throughout the video.
Diesel finished the video simply, saying, “It’s so awesome, and we’re so blessed, and we love you so much.”
Fast and Furious 9 was originally slated for release this year, back on April 19th. However, it was moved to make room for the spin-off Hobbs & Shaw, which hits theaters on August 2nd. Unfortunately, since the Rock is off fighting Idris Elba alongside Jason Statham in that spin-off, he won’t be appearing in Fast and Furious 9. However, John Cena is stepping in to join the franchise in his absence so, at least there’s still an ex-wrestler on the call sheet. Justin Lin, director of the third through the sixth films in the franchise, is also returning to the captain’s chair for this one.
Fast and Furious 9 will hit theaters on May 22nd, 2020.
