College basketball in North Carolina is taken pretty seriously and country music artist Eric Church is no exception to that. The North Carolina native was scheduled to perform a concert this Saturday, but it appears plans have changed. Church released a statement that he would, unfortunately, have to cancel that show because he would be attending the 2022 NCAA Tournament Final Four matchup between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Duke Blue Devils. Church is a longtime fan of the North Carolina Tar Heels and has attended countless games.

This announcement was met with some backlash, but Eric Church admitted upfront that this decision was “the most selfish thing” he’s ever asked of his fanbase named The Church Choir. This Final Four matchup is the first time that longtime rivals North Carolina and Duke have matched up in the NCAA Tournament. The country music star will watch the game with his family and called it a sports enthusiast’s dream game. That part of his statement is hard to argue with at the very least.

The San Antonio, Texas concert that was canceled due to this will issue full refunds to fans for the canceled event. Church is a longtime fan of the North Carolina Tar Heels and it is likely that most fans of the two programs would gladly join him if they had the chance to do just that. The state of North Carolina takes its college basketball very seriously and there may never be a game bigger than this one.
