While the NBA and its fans have been buzzing about the new super squad in Golden State with Kevin Durant, Dwight Howard is unbothered and apparently unaware of who is even on the Warriors.
That’s exactly what the new Atlanta Hawks center said in an interview on Sirius XM NBA Radio when Howard was asked about the 2015 champions:
How do you look at Golden State?
Well, to be honest with you, I haven’t even looked at Golden State.
You haven’t looked at Golden State?
I have not. That’s the honest-to-God truth. I’m happy for K.D. I know a lot of people have been killing him for leaving and going to Golden State, but hey man, he looks happy out there. I did have a chance to, I went to the bowling alley and I saw the first half of their game against the Clippers and he looks happy. He’s in a great situation for himself. But I haven’t really had a chance to really sit down, I don’t really know who’s on their team. I just glanced on the game for a couple minutes. Like I said, I saw the expressions on K.D.’s face of how happy he was. I’m happy for him. They’re going to be a really good team. Hopefully, it would be great to be playing ’em in the Finals. That’d be fun. ‘Cause I personally, they’ve beaten the teams I’ve been on the last couple years, and I want to beat those guys really bad.
One way to take this — Howard is just grateful to be out of the Western Conference with the Warriors. The team he should be directly focused on and aware of is the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Another way to interpret — Howard probably more so meant he hasn’t followed every move the Warriors have made this offseason. I’m sure he’s fully aware that Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green also play for Golden State. There were other changes besides Durant.
It has to be annoying for Howard and other players to be expected to answer in a way that’s going to marvel at how dangerous the Warriors are after adding Durant. They have too much pride for that. Howard and the rest of the league know full well the threat they now face when they see Golden State, but they’re not just going to submit. In this case, Howard said he was happy for Durant and kept it moving.
Again, for Howard, any kind of focus on teams other than the Hawks should be in the Eastern Conference. At least he didn’t go and declare his team as a super team on us.
