Despite some lukewarm reviews from listeners and critics, Drake’s Scorpion has performed quite well. With the release of his newest album, the Toronto native earned the honor of being the first artist to reach one billion streams in one week. The project moved 732, 171 units in its first week and earned Drake his eighth appearance on top of the Billboard 200 charts. Within the album itself, Drake has achieved success with previously released singles like “God’s Plan” and “Nice For What”. Not mention, his newest single, “In My Feelings“, is rising up the charts thanks to its stellar production and the viral #ShiggyChallenge.
While you could already argue that Drake’s impact this summer has already been felt, he may not be done. On his track, “Is There More?”, Drake raps, “As soon as this album drops, I’m out of the deal.” According to a report from Variety, Drake may celebrate the end of his most recent record deal with more new music. Shirley Halperin and Jem Aswad wrote, “A well-placed source tells Variety that when Drake signs his next deal, he’ll have another release ready to drop to accompany the news.” However, it is unclear what the unnamed source means by the word, “release”. Whatever Drake releases will surely be felt within the music industry.
As far as Drake’s next record deal is concerned, his attorney, Dina LaPolt, says, “Drake has the bargaining power to negotiate a net profit split with the best deal terms and a humongous advance up front.” Going forward, it will be interesting to see what business moves and music moves Drake will make.
