Don’t Eat The Cheese: Fantasy Wide Receiver Busts Of 2016

  • September 1, 2016

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports
Demaryius Thomas is among my fantasy busts for wide receivers in 2016 (Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports)

Do you ever find yourself getting stuck with the first round wide receiver that completely ruins your fantasy season? Let’s take a look at some of the wide receivers who “experts” have been predicting will have a great season, but won’t. When I listen to fantasy talk this time of year, I often find myself shaking my head. Don’t pick that guy who ruins your fantasy season. Who are the receivers you should avoid in 2016?

  1. Odell Beckham Jr. (Giants)

Many fantasy experts are much higher on Beckham than I am. For starters I am very wary of new head coach Ben McAdoo. The Giants offense has been lackluster to say the least under McAdoo’s reign as offensive coordinator. One can’t seem to think that unit improves as he gets handed more responsibilities as a head coach. My gut tells me to not take Beckham and his blooming onion haircut that comes with him. Regardless of my negativity he is still a great football player who will have a productive season, I just tend to not be nearly as high on him.

2. Brandon Marshall (Jets)

Don’t get me wrong I like Brandon Marshall but he isn’t a top 10 fantasy option in my opinion. We know this guy will probably be productive but do you really trust Ryan Fitzpatrick to have that kind of season in back to back years? I just see Marshall having 14 touchdowns again in 2016 especially with him turning 33 this year. Guys like Amari Cooper and Keenan Allen are much younger and have higher upsides in my opinion.

3. Demaryius Thomas (Broncos)

Thomas had a pretty productive year in 2015 recording 105 catches, 1,300 yards, and 6 touchdowns. The problem is they have the worst quarterback situation in football right now. The days of Peyton Manning or even Brock Osweiler are gone. Former 7th round pick Trevor Siemian is scheduled to start for the team after having no starting experience. I will be staying away from this entire team when it comes to fantasy as they could be scheduled to have a 6-10 season despite having a great defense. Unless rookie Paxton Lynch finds his way as the starter this team has no shot at the playoffs. Thomas’ numbers will fall accordingly.

4. Marvin Jones (Lions)

The Lions are in for a rough season. With Calvin Johnson out of town they decided to replace him with former Bengal Marvin Jones. Those double teams are going to now be shifted to Jones and could find himself in trouble. This attention could of course be shifted to Golden Tate as well. The fact is this isn’t a very good football team. The good news is the Lions will be constantly behind forced to throw the ball. I’m just not buying the hype on Jones as he could be better suited for a complimentary role just as he had with the Bengals.

5. Michael Floyd (Cardinals)

I love the Cardinals offense but not so much Floyd. Larry Fitzgerald has found his niche in the offense as a sort of undersized tight end and main possession receiver. John Brown Is on the outside and runs the deep routes. J.J. Nelson’s role will likely increase as well after he had a pretty solid rookie year in 2015. I am not so sure where that leaves Floyd? Floyd only had 52 catches a year ago but maintained a solid fantasy ranking cause of his 6 touchdowns in 2015. His targets may diminish in 2015 despite the high offensive output in Arizona.
