Former President Donald Trump has called for the arrest of former U.S. Representative Liz Cheney. Cheney, who represented at-large congressional district from 2017 through 2023, was integral figure in the investigation of the events and actions that led to the violent Capitol Hill riots on January 6, 2021.
I”f your response to Trump’s assault on our democracy is to lie [and] cover up what he did, attack the brave men & women who came forward with the truth, and defend the criminals who violently assaulted the Capitol, you need to rethink whose side you’re on,” Cheney tweeted on March 12, 2024.
Trump has also called for the arrest of former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson.
“She should go to Jail along with the rest of the Unselect Committee,” Trump posted to Truth Social.
Hutchinson was a key witness for the congressional committee investigating the events of January 6, 2021. Under oath, the former White House aide that she had heard that Trump had lunged at the steering wheel of the presidential SUV after he was told he could not rejoin his supporters at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. In response, a House committee investigating the findings of the previous congressional committee has argued that “none of the White House employees corroborated Hutchinson’s sensational story.”
Despite pushback from House Republicans, Hutchinson has continued to stand by her original testimony.
“Let me be clear: since Ms. Hutchinson changed counsel, she has and will continue to tell the truth. While other individuals — often men who occupied more senior roles — would not speak with the Select Committee, Ms. Hutchinson and many other witnesses courageously stepped forward,” Hutchinson’s attorney, William H. Jordan, stated.
“Yet she now finds herself being questioned by you and your Subcommittee regarding her testimony and on matters that may also be the subject of ongoing criminal proceedings against Mr. Trump.”
