Former President Donald Trump is looking to broaden his impact on higher education. The former reality show host has pledged to create a federally funded online university if he is elected to a second term as President. The presidential candidate called the proposed institution “American Academy” and said that it would “revolutionize” higher by providing a curriculum that is devoid of “wokeness or jihadism.”
“We spend more money on higher education than any other country and yet, they’re turning our students into communists and terrorists and sympathizers of many, many different dimensions,” Trump said.
“We can’t let this happen.”
Trump hopes to launch the online institution at no cost to students. Instead, he plans to fund the university’s endeavors by taxing the endowments of wealthy private institutions. A campaign official for Trump told Politico that the voters need more “affordable” options for college.
“It’s a contrast with Joe Biden’s plan for free college, which is to essentially wipe out hundreds of billions of dollars of student loan debt. This is a different way,” a Trump campaign official said.
“We need to have affordable options for college without spending trillions and trillions of dollars.”
