The U.S. Department of Justice is reportedly recommending a 15-year prison sentence for Theranos Founder Elizabeth Holmes.
Considering the extensiveness of Holmes’ fraud … the sentencing of 180 months’ imprisonment would reflect the seriousness of the offenses, provide for just punishment for the offenses, and deter Holmes and others,” prosecutors representing the U.S. Department of Justice stated, according to Reuters.
Holmes was charged and convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and three counts of wire fraud. Each charge carries a prison sentence of up to 20 years. Despite the court’s ruling, attorneys representing Theranos Founder Elizabeth Holmes have argued that she should not serve a prison sentence because she has become a “caricature to be mocked and vilified.” Instead, Holmes’ attorneys have requested that she serve no more than 18 months behind bars.
“We acknowledge that this may seem a tall order given the public perception of this case—especially when Ms. Holmes is viewed as the caricature, not the person,” attorneys representing Theranos Founder Elizabeth Holmes stated, according to the Associated Press.
Holmes is set to receive her sentence on November 18, 2022.
