Early on in the season, the Miami Heat didn’t have much to look forward to as their team was at the bottom of the Eastern conference. That was until the Heat went on an improbable league-leading 13-game win streak to propel them back into the playoff picture and earn some respect back after their slow start.
One of the biggest keys to Miami’s resurgence was not their $98 million max player Hassan Whiteside who has been good in his on regard, but it was shooting guard Dion Waiters who signed a $2.9 million contract in free agency. Waiters, on all accounts, has arguably been the biggest surprise and bright spots of the season.
Waiters is averaging career highs in points per game with 16.1 and three point percentage by shooting 40 percent. But it’s been Waiters’ confidence to take the big shot and his charisma that has won him over with fans this season. Subsequently, Waiters has clearly loved his time in Miami and is looking to get a long-term deal done as soon as possible.
Following from Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald.
“If you don’t think like that, you’re crazy,” he said. “I am enjoying this thing. Whatever it takes [this summer], I just want to be here. What we’re building here, we have a chance to do something special.”
“I want to get it done as quick as possible,” he said, hoping Heat longterm interest is mutual. “Let’s keep this thing rolling by any means. I don’t want to go into free agency with a couple days and make a decision. I don’t want that. I know where I want to be. Let’s just get it done. My mom loves it here. Would be mad at me [if I left]. My son loves it. My family loves it.”
