U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein has been released from the hospital after being treated for shingles. She was treated in San Francisco and will remain in California as she moves forward with outpatient treatment. When she is cleared by medical officials, she says that she hopes to return to Washington, D.C. “as soon as possible.”
“I want to thank everyone for the well wishes and the hospital staff for providing excellent care. I’m recovering at home now while I continue receiving treatment and look forward to returning to the Senate as soon as possible,” Feinstein tweeted.
Feinstein is entering her final months in office. In February, the California-based lawmaker informed her colleagues that she would not seek re-election in 2024.
“I am announcing today I will not run for reelection in 2024 but intend to accomplish as much for California as I can through the end of next year when my term ends,” she said.
Feinstein’s future retirement will open the door for U.S. Representatives Adam Schiff and Barbara Lee to enter the race. Rep. Katie Porter has also entered the race to replace the 89-year-old congresswoman.
“The threat from so-called leaders like Mitch McConnell has too often made the United States Senate a place where rights get revoked, special interests get rewarded and our democracy gets rigged,” Porter said.
“Especially in times like these, California needs a warrior in Washington.”
Election Day is set for November 5, 2024.
