This past season, Derrick Rose and the New York Knicks tried their best to create a super-team of their own. However, it did not go as planned, Instead of being one of the best teams in the league, they have found themselves with the eighth overall pick in the NBA Draft. Despite a rough season, Rose is willing to take a pay cut in order to stay with the Knicks, according to Yaron Weitzman of Bleacher Report.
“‘Derrick loves New York and wants to be there,’ Rose’s agent, B.J. Armstrong, told Bleacher Report recently. ‘We’ve expressed that to them and been very consistent about it. Whether it happens is on them; all we can do is be clear…’ He also insinuated that Rose would be willing to take a pay cut (he made $21.3 million last year).”
In his first season with the Knicks, Derrick Rose averaged 18 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.8 rebounds, while shooting 47.1 percent from the field and 21.7 percent from three in 64 games.
It wasn’t an easy year for the Knicks. There was Carmelo Anthony trade rumors, team drama, and a lot of questioning about Phil Jackson and the triangle. There aren’t many players clamoring to play in New York these days, so the Knicks should jump at the opportunity to sign Rose for a lesser contract.
The Knicks have a lot to think about this summer. They will first have to decide what they are going to do at the draft. There has been talk about them potentially wanting another pick, and the prospect of Anthony being traded on draft night wouldn’t surprise many.
New York will then have to figure out who they are going to sign in free agency. If they get rid of Carmelo’s contract, they will have a lot of money to play around with. They just gave Joakim Noah a horrendous contract last offseason, so they will hope to not make the same mistakes this summer.
