Deron Williams has been in a massive decline for years now. While he had a small resurgence in his first season with the Dallas Mavericks, he is still far from being the player he was in Utah.
Injuries have ravaged Williams for nearly his entire career. Last year was no different, with the point guard missing the postseason as Dallas lost handily to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Nevertheless, the Mavs chose to bring back their point guard with a one-year deal. Williams, while happy to be back, wanted a long-term deal to stay in Dallas.
Following from Williams’ interview with Eddie Sefko of DallasNews.com:
“I’d have liked to be here for a little longer. We’ll see how it goes. It is what it is. For sure, I wanted to be back. I felt like I had some unfinished business at the end of last year the way things ended and I wasn’t able to be on the court. Hopefully I’ll stay healthy because I’m excited about this team.”
Health is the key for Deron Williams. If he is fully healthy for one season, perhaps he could regain some of the form that made him one of the best point guards in the league. Success on the court could eventually lead to a long-term deal with the Mavs or another team. But until that happens, Williams may be forced to play through one-year deals.
