Former WBC Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder earned maintained many people’s respect with a hard fought battle against Tyson Fury on October 9 in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, Wilder ended up on the wrong side of what will be remembered as an all-time great fight. However, the Alabama does not appear to be deterred in the slightest. During a recent interview with World Boxing News, Wilder’s trainer, Malik Scott, laid out a plan for the skilled power puncher to return to the ring.
“After the fight, I kept telling people Deontay’s gonna rest. I don’t want to talk about boxing with him, and I’m not even going to bring boxing up. But after the fight, I’d call him like 2-3 in the morning, wake him up and talk to him about new drills I have for him, new stuff we have to work on. I’m like, ‘Bro, I got these drills, we gonna do this when we get back. You’re gonna be two-time heavyweight champion. It just didn’t happen for us on the night, but, bro, you won a whole lot of glory,'” Scott told Dan Rafael of World Boxing News.
“I said I wouldn’t talk to him about boxing for a bit, and then the minute I go look at the fight, I call him immediately with no consideration for the time. We laughed about it.”
Scott didn’t lay out an exact timetable for Wilder’s return, but Rafael walked away from the conversation confident that the former Olympian will return sooner rather than later. Actually, Rafael went as far as to write that Wilder will return “probably next spring.” In the meantime, the former heavyweight titlist will take a much deserved vacation.
“Deontay said he’s going to go on vacation, and I’m all for that, and in a few months, we’ll be back in camp, and he’ll be fighting.”
