Academy Award winner Denzel Washington is set to appear in the sequel to Ridley Scott’s Gladiator.
More than 15 years ago, Scott and Washington developed American Gangster together. Under Scott’s direction, Washington played the role of Frank Lucas alongside Russell Crowe, who starred in the first Gladiator film. Washington and Scott’s work earned more than $260 million on a budget of approximately $100 million. In addition to working with Ridley Scott, Washington also appeared in films directed by his brother, Tony, including Crimson Tide and Man on Fire.
Sixteen years after American Gangster, Washington and Scott will reunite for the Gladiator sequel starring Paul Mescal. Mescal will play the role of Lucius, the son of Marcus Aurelius and nephew of Commodus. The film will take place years after the original film. At this time, it is unclear what Washington’s role will be in the sequel.
Beyond an appearance in the Gladiator sequel, Washington is set to star in The Equalizer III. The film is currently in post-production and set to be released in September.
