David O. Russell will reportedly direct a feature film about the life and legacy of 11-time Grammy winner Linda Ronstadt. The film has not yet landed at a studio, but Selena Gomez is expected to portray the award-winning musician.
Ronstadt is a 77-year-old musician from Tucson, Arizona, who rose to prominence in the 1960s as a key voice in America’s emerging folk rock movement. Her dynamic style and unique voice powered her legendary career to 11 GRAMMY Awards, an Emmy Award and a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Along the way, she collaborated with the likes of Neil Young, Paul Simon, Bette Midler and Dolly Parton among others. In the early 2000s, her career slowed after she was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy. A decade later, she put her career into her own words by way of an autobiography called Simple Dreams: A Musical Memoir.
Gomez posted a photo of Ronstadt’s memoir on Instagram earlier this month. The entertainer rose to prominence in the early 2000s through children’s films and television, but has taken on more developed roles in films like A Rainy Day In New York and The Dead Don’t Die in adulthood. Most recently, she played Mabel Mora in Only Murders In The Building and took an unnamed role in the upcoming film, Emilia Perez.
Russell is a veteran director best known for helming Silver Linings Playbook, The Fighter and American Hustle. Most recently, he directed Amsterdam starring John David Washington, Christian Bale and Margot Robbie.
