When David Blatt was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, it did not by any means put an end to his great career. He posted a mark of 83-40 during his tenure as Cavs head coach but he and LeBron James didn’t always see eye-to-eye which brought upon the hire of Tyronn Lue.
Even before he was hired by Cleveland, Blatt was an exceptional head coach in Europe where he won plenty of hardware and he has continued coaching overseas since his firing. However, Blatt still knows where he ultimately wants to be and that’s coaching on an NBA sideline again according to a recent interview he had with Allon Sinai of The Jerusalem Post:
It won’t happen this summer. But Blatt is determined to give himself another chance to return to the NBA.
“I have an end game and that end game is that I would really like to go back to the NBA,” Blatt told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday.
“There were no changes in the NBA this year from a coaching standpoint and my real goal is to try next year to get back into the league as a head coach. It may happen and it may not happen. But I wanted to leave that door open for myself if the opportunity arises.”
David Blatt is a talented coach and is right to remain hopeful that he gets another shot at coaching in the NBA. As Blatt pointed out, there weren’t really any opportunities for him to make a comeback this summer but if he continues doing his thing in Europe and a coaching spot in the NBA is vacated, expect Blatt to be on a short list of potential candidates.
