According to a report from THR, David Ayer has left the ‘Scarface’ remake. The ‘Suicide Squad‘ director has apparently left due to creative differences with the studio. Ayer’s take was apparently “too dark” for the studio’s liking. Though this shouldn’t come as a surprise for those familiar with Ayer’s work outside of the DCEU. The director has often dabbled in the underbelly of society with a film like ‘End of Watch’ showcasing in hyper-realistic detail the trials and tribulations of members of the LAPD as they deal with the Sinaloa drug cartel. Ayer also wrote the classic 2001 film ‘Training Day’ in which Denzel Washington delivers an all time great performance as LAPD officer Alonzo Harris. The aforementioned the accomplishments made Ayer a natural choice for the ‘Scarface’ remake but apparently Universal thought otherwise. The remake is rumoured to be focused on a Mexican cartel leader this time around with Diego Luna (‘Rogue One’, ‘Flatliners‘) playing the title role. Joel and Ethan Coen have penned the script alongside “The Wolf of Wall Street’ and ‘The Sopranos’ scribe Terence Winter.
The film is currently slated for an August 10th, 2018 release date. Stay tuned for more details as they develop.
