On Friday, May 23, 2025, D’Angelo announced that he would no longer headline Roots Picnic at The Mann in Fairmount Park on May 31-June 1, 2025. The legendary singer had been advised not to perform “due to an unforeseen medical delay regarding surgery” he had earlier this year.
“It is nearly impossible to express how disappointed [I] am not to be able to play with my [b]rothers[,] The Roots. [I am] even more disappointed not to see all of you,” D’Angelo wrote. “[I] am so thankful to my beautiful fans for continuing to rock with me, and [I] thank you for your continued support. [I] am currently in the lab and can’t wait to serve up what’s in the point. [I] love [you] all and will see you very soon.”
Despite changes to the lineup, The Roots Picnic will move forward with fellow headliners, Meek Mill and Lenny Kravitz. The annual event will also feature performances from GloRilla, Miguel, Tems, Latto, Kaytranada, Musiq Soulchild, Adam Blackstone, Jagged Edge, and Jeezy, among others. In addition to musical performances, the festival will feature Roots Picnic Con, “an all-day FREE event that will give you knowledge on a range of topics.” Malcolm D Lee, Da’Vinchi, Black Thought, and Laila! are set to headline Roots Picnic Con. Not to mention, the event will also feature Trap Karaoke, Girls Love Karaoke, Doo-Wop …That R&B Party and other special surprises.
