Though always considered an elite NBA player, Damian Lillard has cemented himself as one of the league’s top-tier point guard talents. His Portland Trail Blazers are in the thick of a hotly-contested Western Conference playoff race with a current record of 34-26 through 60 games.
While Lillard has been spectacular all season, the Weber State product took it to another level still this past month. In fact, Dame’s past 30 days have actually been historic as his 31.4 points per game average since the beginning of February shattered the Blazers’ previous record of 30.4.
Lillard knows he’s in a franchise with some great lineage, but he still sets high goals for himself. Following from Portland Tribune’s Kerry Eggers:
“I want to be the best Trail Blazer ever… I can’t say things like that without leading the team to a successful season, winning games, and having a huge impact on that happening. That goes along with it. My production and my leadership has to say that.”
While the personal accolades are certainly nice, Damian Lillard knows earning that title will have to come with hard-earned wins. And not only regular season wins, but the Blazers are expected to shake things up in the postseason this year after being bounced by the Warriors each of the past two seasons.
In competition with the likes of Clyde Drexler and Bill Walton, Lillard will have to lead Portland to sustained playoff success if he wants to make true on his goal of becoming the best Blazer ever.
Lillard has especially been on a tear in recent games, averaging 37.2 points per over his last six outings. Behind Lillard and backcourt mate C.J. McCollum, Portland will look for a late-season boost as they gear up for a hopeful playoff run.
