The Portland Trail Blazers had a rather unceremonious exit from the 2018 NBA Playoffs. Despite having home court advantage and facing a New Orleans team that was without DeMarcus Cousins, the Blazers were swept. On top of the playoff loss, Portland has also had to deal with swirling rumors that superstar point guard Damian Lillard wants out. Thankfully for Blazers fans, Lillard has come out to squash those rumors.
“I’m not unhappy,” Lillard said Sunday to Joe Freeman of the Oregonian. “I love where I live. I love the organization. I love our coaching staff. I love where I am.”
While it is good to hear things straight from his mouth, Lillard has had quips about the direction of the franchise. He sat down with Blazers team owner Paul Allen in January, which started the rumors of Lillard’s unhappiness. Portland also let one of Lillard’s closest friends, Ed Davis, walk in free agency and sign with the Brooklyn Nets.
“I loved Ed,” Lillard continued to The Oregonian. “One of my best friend’s in the league (and) favorite teammates I’ve played with. To lose him, that’s a loss for our team.”
Portland also lost backup guards Shabazz Napier and Pat Connaughton to free agency. Two more rotation players gone. “Bazz (Shabazz Napier) played big minutes for us.” Lillard continued. “Pat played big minutes for us. So we lose three rotation players that gave us a lot, that contributed to our season last year.”
Given the Blazers’ clogged financial situation, tough decisions have to be made. However, with the Western Conference getting tougher and tougher, Portland’s ability to make a deep playoff run may be dwindling. Keeping Damian Lillard happy all while staying within the margins of financial feasibility is tight rope to walk.
