Coming off of his breakout run on Netflix’s Rhythm + Flow, Inglewood’s D Smoke is heading into the year ready to take things to the next level. His first offering of the new year is a video for his latest single, “Honey Jack”. The new video takes the California musician back to the Civil Rights era. In the video, he plays the role of a writer, bus boy and headlining musician. In doing so, he touches on topics of criminal justice, racism and more.
He raps, “I left the hood to rearrange how we approach the game/But that exposure got me feelin’ like the odds is stacked against us/Systematic oppression, we just servants indentured/Politicians retire while we work ’til we in dentures.”
D Smoke adds, “They kill our black heroes and then just give us one Avenger/Wakanda forever, my n*gga/More like pour me a drink, I wonder what kind of liquor.”
“Honey Jack” is the latest record to get the single treatment from his 2019 project, Inglewood High. Check out the video above. Also, be sure to listen to his Inglewood High EP here.
