Michael B. Jordan’s directorial debut, Creed III, is proving to be a hit at the box office. Previous chapters of the Creed saga failed to exceed $35 million at the box office during their five-day Thanksgiving opening weekend. In contrast, Jordan’s directorial debut picked up $22 million on Friday alone. Overall, the film is expected to pull in more than $50 million at the box office during its opening weekend.
Jordan’s directorial debut is not only performing well at the box office, but it is also polling well among critics. Thus far, the film has earned an 87% approval rating among critics and a 96% approval rating among fans. Some have even gone as far as to call it the best of the three Creed films.
“Creed III packs one hell of a punch,” Kristy Puchko of Mashable wrote.
“The first Rocky came out in 1976 and showed no sign of being the kind of movie that would spawn eight follow-ups. But with the inventiveness of Creed III, an old franchise suddenly feels fresh,” David Sims of The Atlantic added.
Moving forward, Jordan and his new co-star, Jonathan Majors, have plans on working together in the future.
“We plan on it,” Jordan said during a recent interview when asked if he’d work with Majors again.
“De Niro and Pacino,” Majors added.
Creed III is expected to top the box office in week one and has the potential to maintain a strong place in theaters heading into week two.
