Good things come to those who wait! After years of waiting, fans will finally get to see the welterweight showdown they have been craving for. On July 29, 2023, WBO Welterweight Champion Terence Crawford will reportedly fight unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Representatives for neither fighter have directly confirmed the report put forth by boxing insider Mike Coppinger of ESPN. However, Terence Crawford has listed the date and venue for the fight on his official website.
“Yessir! Let’s go Bud,” one fan tweeted after hearing the news.
“This is the best possible fight to make in the sport. Let’s hope it holds,” another fan commented.
Digging deeper into the initial report put forth by Coppinger, the fight will take place on July 29th in Las Vegas. Regardless of the outcome, the contract includes a bilateral rematch clause. If the clause is enacted, the fight must reportedly take place before the end of the year. If both fighters split the first two bouts, a third bout is “overwhelmingly likely.” Afterward, the winner is expected to move up to the super welterweight division and challenge the 154-pound champion.
“Whoever comes out on top is expected to push for a shot at the undisputed junior middleweight championship, which is currently held by Jermell Charlo,” Coppinger wrote.
The battle for the undisputed welterweight title fight will conclude a month of boxing that includes Eimantas Stanionis fighting Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Stephen Fulton Jr. traveling to Japan to fight Naoya Inoue.
