The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has risen in nearly half of U.S. states this week. With nearly 7 million total cases, the U.S. experienced an uptick of more than 50,000 confirmed cases on Friday. Furthermore, the country passed the 200,000 death toll mark that seemed nearly impossible in March.
Earlier this week, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers declared a statewide public health emergency. On Saturday, the state reported 2,817 cases, a state record. Evers noted that there was an increase in confirmed cases among young people. As a result, he allocated $8.3 million towards testing at college campuses.
“Wisconsin is now experiencing unprecedented, near-exponential growth of the number of COVID-19 cases in our state,” he said
Elsewhere, states are experiencing record high confirmed COVID-19 cases. On Saturday, South Dakota reported 579 new cases, a single-day record for the state. Montana reported 346 cases on Saturday which is also a single-day record for the state.
Despite concerns in some parts of the country, other states are showing progress. Most notably, Florida has seen a decline in confirmed COVID-19 cases since hitting 12,000 in a single day just a few months ago.
