Colin Kaepernick is in just a tad bit of hot water right now. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback recently decided to take a stand and sit during the playing of the National Anthem a couple of nights ago.
While Kap might be facing an off-field battle, it appears his battles on the field might be also getting him into some trouble. Despite having one of the biggest contracts for a quarterback in NFL history, Colin might be a victim to the always dreadful roster cuts.
He inked a six-year, $114 million extension in 2015 and he’s done everything but live up to his money. His contract for this season worth $11.9 million became fully guaranteed for the 2016 season back in April. If the Niners want to avoid paying over $65 million over the next four seasons, they will need to make a decision soon because he’s going to get a big raise going into 2017.
Would the Niners dare cut Kaepernick? Crazier things have happened in the NFL but to this point all other options to try and get rid of him have failed. No one wants to trade for him and his skills and health have diminished in a short amount of time. He has a big contract hit this season and it’s rare to see a guy with his guaranteed money just get cut but if the Niners see a future with Blaine Gabbert as their leading man, getting rid of Kap would be the only logical move. Paying a backup quarterback a top 20 annual salary and top 5 total contract value in the NFL would just be silly.
His future is beyond up in the air, both on and off the field.
