The Cleveland Cavaliers are making a special trip to Irving’s home state of New Jersey a trip that will involve offering a five year $90 million contract extension to Irving. Kyrie’s contract is not up until next season, but The Cavaliers are being proactive so they know where he stands so they do not get spurned in free agency once again. More than likely Irving will accept the extension, while Cleveland is the team that can offer him the most money. Irving’s had his ups and downs in the early part of his career, and it was clear Irving and former head coach Mike Brown didn’t exactly click like Irving and Byron Scott did.
Irving had a disappointing season last year where everyone expected him to make the leap from potential star into a star point guard (much like John Wall did this past season). Cleveland missed the playoffs in a weak Eastern Conference, and not blaming it entirely on him. It was certainly a cluster of things going wrong between drama in the locker room, coaching, and just lack of talent around him but Kyrie needs to make the jump this year especially if he accepts the max offer from Cleveland. Cleveland will get him the help this off season if he chooses to stay with the team. Cleveland has a ton of cap space and plenty of free agents out there, but once Irving accepts the extension the pressure is on and Irving has the skill to succeed it’s just a matter of when.
